Das Appartement buchte ich bereits im Januar, die Hin- und Rückfahrt sind auch gebucht.

Die verbleibenden Tage werde ich mich damit beschäftigen, was ich unbedingt für die fünfeinhalb Tage benötige.

Warum Helgoland?

Vor acht Jahren verbrachte ich im Juni zehn Tage dort. Nach einigen anstrengenden Jahren gewann ich dort meine Gesundheit wieder. Was ebenso wichtig war: Ich faßte damals den Entschluß, mein restliches Leben ganz der Fotografie und dem Schreiben zu widmen.

Jetzt wird es Zeit, auf die Insel zurückzukehren. Ich brauche den Abstand zu den letzten drei Jahren; ich brauche Zeit, um Ereignisse und Begegnungen des letzten Jahres zu bewerten und neue fotografische Themen zu erarbeiten. Meiner Gesundheit wird es guttun, Hamburg für ein paar Tage den Rücken zu kehren.

Meine Tagebuchnotizen werde ich nicht als eigenen Blog schreiben, sondern auf dieser Seite festhalten.

In January I booked the apartment, the passage by catamaran has been reserved.

The remaining days I shall be busy deciding what I really need for those five and a half days.

Why Heligoland?

Eight years ago in June I spent ten days on the island. There I regained my health after some exacting years. And it was there that I decided to dedicate the rest of my life to photography and writing.

Now it is time to return to the island. I need to distance myself from the last years, to take stock of last year’s events and encounters, and to look for new photographic topics. Leaving Hamburg behind for a few days will also be good for my health.

This page will serve as a diary and work journal. I used to write separate diary blogs, but I found out that it is more convenient to add pages to my photo blog.

Koffer und Kamerarucksack sind fast fertig gepackt. Ein paar Änderungen in letzter Minute werde ich mir in einer Teepause überlegen.

Die Überfahrt verlief ereignislos. Zwar gab es zwischen Neuwerk und Helgoland etwas kabbelige See und der Steward verteilte die traditionellen Tüten, aber mehr ist nicht zu berichten.

Mein Appartement ist ein Traum, a home from home, hier ist der englische Ausdruck der präziseste. Einrichten, im Supermarkt einkaufen und den Kühlschrank füllen. Was sollte ich als nächstes machen?

Ich entschied, den Transfer der Tagesgäste zu beobachten, die zwischen 16:00 und 16:30 die Insel wieder verlassen. Dann fuhr ich mit der Fähre zur Düne, bummelte zum Flughafen-Restaurant und aß einen sehr späten Lunch.

Dann einige Fotos von landenden und startenden Flugzeugen: die bewährten Britten-Norman Islanders. Zum ersten Mal sah ich auch die Variante mit Turboprop-Antrieb. Probierte aus, bei welcher Verschlußzeit die Propeller als Scheibe oder wenigstens verwischt erscheinen.

Ich folgte der Küstenlinie der Aade, baumelte mit der Seele und sah den Tierfotografen zu, welche die Kegelrobben-Kolonie beobachteten.

Ins Appartement, beinahe hätte ich ›nachhause‹ gesagt. Bilder des Tages gespeichert und am Blog geschrieben.

The crossing was uneventful. The sea was choppy between the island of Neuwerk and Heligoland, the steward distributed the traditional sickness bags, and that was about all.

My apartment is a genuine home from home. I settled down, went to the supermarket and filled the fridge for the next few days. What next?

I decided to watch the transfer of the day trippers who leave the island between 4 and 4:30 pm.Took the ferry to the Dune, ambled to the airport restaurant and had a very late lunch.

Took some pictures of planes* taking off and landing to find out the correct shutter speed which lets the propeller appear like a silver disc or at least very blurred.

I followed the eastern coastline of the Aade, relaxed and watched the wildlife photographers who were monitoring the colony of seals and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus).

Back home to the apartment, saved the photos of the day to the harddisc and began this blog entry.

*The ever dependable Britten-Norman Islanders. For the first time I also saw the turboprop model. The helicopters are employed by the offshore wind farms.

Wachte gegen 02.15 auf, weil es so ungewöhnlich ruhig war. Nichts deutete auf den vorhergesagten Sturm hin.
Woke up in the wee small hours because everything was so unusually quiet. No sign yet of the gale we have to expect.

Der Sturm kam auf. Nach dem ersten Frühstück im Appartement zum Fähranleger und die Kurpromenade entlang, dann Einkäufe.

Keine Schiffe, keine Flugverbindungen.

Einige Ansichtskarten geschrieben. Nach dem Mittagessen gefaulenzt. Unter den Büchern im Appartement war ein durchaus lesbarer Roman von Mary Ryan.

Ab 16.30 Bunkerführung, wie vor acht Jahren mit Herrn Blädel. Kenntnisreich und voller Anekdoten. [Fotos später einfügen]

Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang zur Westküste und zum Südhafen.

Alles in allem tat die erzwungene Untätigkeit gut; so gewann ich Abstand von der Hektik der letzten Wochen.

The storm came over Heligoland. After the first breakfast in the apartment I went to the landing stage of the ferry, then ambled along the promenade. Did some shopping and wrote a few postcards.

No ships or flights today.

After lunch a lazy time with a novel by Mary Ryan. There is a small collection of books in the apartment, and the German translation of Summer’s End is readable.

From 4:30 pm to 5.45 pm guided tour through Heligoland’s bunker system. Herr Blädel was our tour guide like as he was eight years ago. Well-informed, full of anecdotes and with his wry humour he made it a very interesting tour.

Shortly before sunset I went to the west coast and the south harbour.

All in all the forced inactivity did me good. I could relax after the last few hectic weeks in Hamburg.
